Let me start out with some background. I’m 24 years old, living in NYC and working as a stage manager in theatre. It’s exciting and for more information go to the “About” page.
But this blog isn’t about theatre, it’s about aviation and my training to get my Private Pilot’s License. Give me a chance to play catch up though because my discovery flight was February 2nd and I already have about 5 hours flying. There will be plenty of posts at first.
As you know if you’ve read the “About” page but my boyfriend is a regional airline FO and that’s what sparked my interest in aviation. I’ve learned a lot from him and I found out through all my questions that I wanted to know even more and to do it myself. I did my research and budget and when I had the courage to present it I got the support I wanted from him and made my way out to KFRG to begin lessons.
My boyfriend told me that I would take off and do most of the flying that first lesson. You can hear someone say that to you but when you taxi up to the runway and your instructor turns to you and says “You’re doing the take off” are two totally different things. I must say that I was extremely nervous. I believe because it took me months of looking up schools and prices, agonizing over how I would have the conversation with the BF, then scheduling it and waiting a few weeks, being cancelled due to weather and waiting some more, then the hour and a half trip out there just thinking about what is to come, so that when that moment right before flying came, I was about terrified.
Here’s the best part though, once that plane lifted off the runway and we had not immediately crashed, all my nervousness was gone. It was exciting and I was in control! It was freeing and an uplifting experience. I enjoyed every second of it. Once we were back on the ground I couldn’t wait to do it again! But unfortunately, I had to wait.
