They picked 6 pilot interns (all with CFIs) to fly new 172s all over the country to go to events and promote general aviation. You can follow each of the pilots on Facebook. I’ll admit I didn’t follow all of the pilots, but the ones I deemed posting the most interesting stories and pictures. I must say I enjoy more flying pictures popping up on my newsfeed recently.
I think this program is awesome. An opportunity like this would definitely make me consider getting my CFI. Some of the pilots post about how many discovery flights they do during their events, I’d love follow up after the 8 weeks their doing this how much of those then take on flight training. I believe it would be a better result than those Groupon/Livingsocial deals for Discovery Flights because the participants would have had to find their way to a local airport by themselves versus an email with a cheap price and with a mind set that it’d be fun to try once, like many of those deals strike in people’s heads.
The only sad thing to see is that they didn’t pick any female pilots (or maybe none fit the qualifications/applied?), the girl who is in the photo is their dispatcher and has only been up in a GA plane twice, once since this program started. To me, that’s a little upsetting to see since there are females already in the general aviation community that would probably have loved to do that. I know I would have, but I only saw the CFI position advertise. Devil’s Advocate to myself, if this opportunity persuades her into flying more, that’s part of what this “challenge” is all about.
Anyway, looks like a great program and it’s fun to follow some of them!
